BRITTEN's
THE TURN OF THE SCREW
February 6, 8m, 12, 14, 2009|
Keller Auditorium |
Based on a
Henry James tale, Britten’s opera has recently enjoyed
significant popularity at the New York City Opera and many
other regional and national companies. It has also been the
subject of films including The Innocents starring Deborah
Kerr and The Others starring Nicole Kidman. The Turn of the
Screw is a modern masterpiece that preserves almost every
detail of James’ story. It is an atmospheric, strange and
powerful piece with intense, evocative music. And perhaps
best of all, it is a psychological thriller wrapped in a
gothic ghost story that will put audiences on the edge of
their seats.
The Portland Opera production will
feature 40 local senior citizens in non-singing roles
(called Supers), the oldest being 89!
